Maybe it’s time to consider demoing some other fediverse options under iridescent.nz?
For example, it would be good to have an instance of something designed for posting without a character limit. I keep hearing that Akkoma has a much lighter server footprint than a Mastodon for the same output, and a number of other benefits. Disroot are now running Akkoma if you want to check that out (you’ll need a disroot account). The interface they’re using looks pretty good too.
Also, I was thinking it would great to have a “threadiverse” instance like Lemmy or KBin. But then I remembered that Discourse has been working on ActivityPub support. I think it’s still a plug-in that @lightweight would need to install on this Discourse forum.
Once that’s done, each category on the forum can have AP federation toggled on and off. So we can federate ones where we want broader participation, while keeping others internal to those who have an account here.
I’m running a PieFed instance which is really impressive. And it’s a project led by a guy called Rimu from Ōtautahi, so especially cool. I’d consider setting up another as an Iridescent entry. There’re other Fedi apps under the Iridescent banner already (e.g. Events). Also, I’m quite impressed by Mastodon and now have extensive experience running it - I don’t see any compelling reason to switch to Akkoma, but I’m happy to hear others are finding it good. Diversity in the open standards-compliant code bases is vital.
I have to check in on the Discourse-ActivityPub plugin to see if it’s usable yet… if so, happy to add it.
FYI that link is broken. I guessed and took the ‘s’ off “links”, and that works. I’ve chatted to Rimu about PieFed, great to see an experienced kiwi geek getting involved in AP dev, for sure.
I’m not arguing for switching, but rather adding. Mastodon is pretty good for microblogging, but as I said;
You’ve mentioned running Ghost instances in other contexts, and they’re really leaning into ActivityPub. What about a ghost.iridescent.nz?
Another reason to experiment with a range of fediverse software is server performance. You must have noticed the number of crutches you have to give Mastodon’s Ruby-on-Rails back-end to keep it moving, as it gets older and bigger. I can’t speak from experience, but as I said, I keep hearing that many other fediverse back-ends have a much lighter server footprint than Mastodon for the same output.
The SocialHub Discourse is using it to federate a few forum categories , and we’re working on federating more of them.
Yes, sorry about the bad link. Well done finding the right one - I see that I’ve already had the ActivityPub plugin installed for ages (I’ve also just added the ‘Solved’ plugin which is to mark a topic that discusses a problem as ‘solved’)… So it’s just a matter of configuring it now.
Awesome. Do we have the latest stable version?
What does that involve?
Hey @lightweight , would you be into the idea of using fediverse.iridescent.nz as demonstration of static site generator? It could be a landing page for our AP-federated services, including info about;
Right now
With some tweaking
- discourse.iridescent.nz; after we turn on the AP interop plugins for the appropriate categories)
- NextCloud; there was a lot of talk about AP federation for NC, has anyone tested whether it connects with the rest of the fediverse?
Maybe one day
Maybe could link to local instances of things we don’t (yet) host examples of ourselves? Like PeerTube.nz and lemmy.nz.
