Some excellent additions to my RSS feed reader!
In theory these can all be followed by a fediverse account too. Although with Ghost that requires a bit of setup, which I haven’t done for Disintermedia yet. Also, the testing I’ve done with my Mastodon.nzoss.nz account has been a bit hit and miss. It would be great to organise some rigorous testing to figure out what’s going wrong in each case, and how to get it working.
On the hit-and-miss following: in my experience it’s almost always WebFinger. A quick way to test a Ghost site before blaming Mastodon is to request /.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:index@yourdomain on the site itself - if that doesn’t come back with JSON, no fediverse server will find the account no matter what you type in the search box.
For self-hosted installs the usual culprit is the reverse proxy: nginx or Caddy configs copied from older Ghost guides often only pass the blog paths and drop /.well-known/ and the ActivityPub routes, so it works on Ghost(Pro) and silently fails on a VPS. Also worth searching for the full handle (@index@domain) rather than the site URL - some Mastodon instances resolve one and not the other, which is probably why results vary from account to account.
Happy to help with a round of testing if someone wants to set up a checklist - having a couple of Kiwi Ghost sites followable from the local Mastodon servers would be a nice demo for the rest of the community.
Thanks for this @MeganStirling. The problems I noticed happened when I was using my account on the venerable mastodon.nzoss.nz server, and could be related to its database issues. I just followed WebWorm.co and BillBennett.co.nz using my new mastodon.nz account, and it’s working fine.
