Mastodon 5.0 is looking like quite a step change. Combined with the back-end changes in 4.7, it looks like Team Mastodon are getting ready to implement the W3C SocialCG’s work on E2EE private messages. Which is exciting.
Also …
“.. users on independent servers running on Mastodon 5.0 will see their server’s name (and optional icon) displayed more prominently, with a small ‘Powered by Mastodon’ indicator …”
@lightweight snce NZOSS sadly appears to be a dodo, I don’t know how much sense it makes to highlight its name and logo. Maybe it’s time to stand up a new Mastodon server under iridescent.nz, give everyone a few months to migrate over, then make the nzoss.nz server read-only?
EDIT: Given how much of a faff the 4.6 to 4.7 upgrade has been for our long-suffering admins, now might be the time. So the 4.7 to 5.0 goes much more smoothly.
@lightweight FYI in the last couple of days, I’ve been noticing mastodon.nzoss.nz getting a bit flaky again. Particularly having trouble with searches. It’s also giving me 500 errors on posting some links, maybe because it’s failing to fetch previews?
Could be that it’s close to filling up its available storage space? Could flushing some old media help as a short term fix?
Oh, mastodon.nzoss.nz
Now the poor old dear has really shit the bed. Right in the middle of the great PHP locust plague of '26, doesn’t rain but it pours, eh? We are very lucky to have @lightweight (and helpers?) diligently fighting all these fires affecting iridescent.nz services (and any surviving nzoss.nz ones), and doing the preventative bush-clearing that reduces the number there are to fight.
I hope Dave is planning to take a least a day or 2 of well-deserved rest over the long weekend. He’ll need it by this point, and we need him sharp! Instead of using the services he hasn’t managed to repair/ initiate yet, the rest of us will just have to go for a walk, or talk to other humans in person
Once back in the studio, I think the priority is the new Mastodon at social.iridescent.nz. AFAIK there’s no deadline on when we can migrate the follows/ followers from our old nzoss accounts to our new ones, and getting account migrations to work may take longer than restoring the old server anyway.
I don’t know how much use the Friendica server is getting, but it seems like a much lower priority from where I’m sitting. Not sure what other PHP-based services still need refloating.

@lightweight FYI Even after the Labour weekend fixes, the issues with the old Mastodon refusing to post some links persists. It wouldn’t post this one for example, until I chopped the ‘https://’ off.
