Third Way - better Digital Technology in NZ schools

In light of this ambitious far-reaching report from the Danish government’s expert digital tech advisory group, I want to develop a proposal for the NZ Ministry of Education to develop a viable ‘Third Way’, alongside the current duopoly of US-based BigTech monopolies that completely own the digital technology landscape in schools right now.

I have previously provided a sketch (with supporting materials) describing a proven ‘different’ and, I think, better approach to digital technology in education, and I’ve also described some fundamental problems with the current duopoly here in Aotearoa that I think need to be addressed quite urgently.

Because all available resources have been poured into the US-based technology monopolies’ services, there is unsurprisingly no mature, ‘drop in’ tech alternative available to the Ministry of Education. We open tech experts, however, know that there is a rich ecosystem of tools and services which could relatively rapidly, with minimal investment, be moulded into a credible alternative to the monopolies, and it would address their inherent structural and cultural flaws, like digital colonisation and data sovereignty. What we need now is a clear plan that the Ministry of Education can resource to pilot that ‘Third Way’. Also, components of the open approach can be piloted independently, and be deployed for the benefit of our education system more quickly than others.

That’s why I have created this topic in this forum (which I run, hosted onshore in Aotearoa) whose hosting is generously sponsored by CatalystCloud, Please create an account for yourself and join in the discussion!
